This unique resource helps therapists build their skills in schema therapy (ST) by applying ST techniques to themselves and reflecting on the experience. Designed for use by individuals or groups, the book harnesses the power of self-practice/self-reflection (SP/SR), an evidence-based training strategy. Twenty modules take therapists step by step through using ST to address a professional or personal problem–from establishing safety and creating a self-conceptualization to implementing mode change work, including cognitive, experiential, and behavioral pattern-breaking interventions. In a convenient large-size format, the book is illustrated with vivid therapist examples and features numerous reproducible worksheets and forms for doing the SP/SR exercises. Purchasers get access to a Web page where they can download and print the reproducible materials.

Why work with this book? Because it will make you a better Therapist! This book is not only a “must read” for Schema therapists, but for therapists in general. There is probably no more profound or practical self-reflection approach than the unique combination of experiential work within the comprehensive framework of the Schema therapy model. It combines the depth of psychodynamic experiencing with the rationale of the CBT approach. The model is easy to grasp for therapists of different theoretical background. The structure of the book is very systematic. The authors are outstanding experts in the field. All relevant issues are covered. The self-practice component increases the therapist’s understanding of the patient experience and attunement to their issues. In addition, it can provide us as therapists with greater satisfaction and happiness in our own lives. Schema therapy is a potential healer for (almost) everyone!

It was good reading but nothing different from most of the CBT stuff that’s out there

This book brilliantly addresses the challenge of consistently providing effective ST by better understanding our own schema’s.
Created as an advanced level blueprint for understanding the emotions that may get triggered in client sessions (or life) the authors can almost be heard cheering on the reader to enhance the quality of their work.
Written exercises and self-reflection help answer the questions that may come up in doing schema work: why am I feeling this way & what can I do about it? In helping therapists better recognize the impact of our personal schemas, the authors teach us step-by- step how to be fully present in our therapeutic work and able to more fully utilize the depth of the ST approach. Highly recommended.

I recently completed ST training. This book is so useful for me to review the fundamentals of schema therapy while applying the methods for my own issues as a therapist. It helps to apply the methods to the clients.
