Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills have been demonstrated to be effective in helping adolescents manage difficult emotional situations, cope with stress, and make better decisions. From leading experts in DBT and school-based interventions, this unique manual offers the first nonclinical application of DBT skills. The book presents an innovative social–emotional learning curriculum designed to be taught at the universal level in grades 6–12. Explicit instructions for teaching the skills–mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness–are provided in 30 lesson plans, complete with numerous reproducible tools: 99 handouts, a diary card, and three student tests. The large-size format facilitates photocopying; purchasers also get access to a Web page where they can download and print the reproducible materials. This book is in The Guilford Practical Intervention in the Schools Series, edited by Sandra M. Chafouleas.

As a school-based counselor, I’ve returned to this resource time and time again. It’s proven to be orderly, accessible, and effective in my work to empower rural AI/AN youth living and dealing the effects of intergenerational and complex trauma in the school setting.

This is an amazing book. It is not often that a book comes a long that changes one’s world-view. I like most every book put out by Guilford Press and this one is no exception.

I was hoping for more stuff I could use with younger kids, but otherwise it is great!

Excellent curriculum that can be used in the classroom with all students, in small groups, or individually with students meeting with their school counselors. There are numerous activity pages that work through important concepts related to learning to develop distress tolerance and use our emotions wisely and mindfully. A tool for “typical” students self-awareness and dysregulated students toolbox for self-regulation.

James and Liz Mazza have done a fabulous job bringing needed DBT skills to adolescents in schools. The kids won’t believe the almost immediate measurable results that they will find with practice. Their peers will hold them accountable for their homework too. The book is set up to help teachers every step of the way! I wish this class had been around when I was attempting to navigate through the junior high and high school years!

La mejor herramienta para trabajar si tienes un entrenamiento en DBT
Angie Kiker –
This book is full of the typical, useful DBT worksheets. The extra part is that there are lesson plans clearly written for those not use to running DBT groups. Really well put together and thought out book!

Good structure, content, exercises, and practice material to use with teenagers. Was text in a wellness and resilience course I took. Will incorporate some material in a leadership class I teach at the college level and try to apply some skills in classroom for inclusion, safety, and caring.
