Regulate intense emotions, change problematic behaviors, and build fulfilling relationships with this self-directed DBT skills program.
Created by psychologist Marsha M. Linehan, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based approach for managing difficult emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. In this practical guide and workbook, you will develop skills in four key areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. While traditional DBT programs take 6 to 12 months to complete and require weekly individual therapy, weekly group skills training, and regular phone coaching, Self-Directed DBT Skills distills the DBT skills into a 3-month program that anyone can access and implement on their own. Using this roadmap filled with actionable exercises, you’ll build a strong foundation for emotional well-being and create lasting change.
· Beginner-friendly DBT fundamentals that prepare you to move through a 3-month program so you can learn DBT skills without a DBT therapist
· 3-month timeline with progressive skill-building to add new skills to your DBT toolbox with weekly chapters that take 15 to 30 minutes to read
· Step-by-step exercises by DBT-Linehan-board-certified psychologists who have helped hundreds of clients build meaningful lives through DBT
· Downloadable worksheets and bonus materials like a DBT Skills Cheat Sheet to reinforce skills and help you apply them to your daily life

This book is a game changer for anyone who wants to learn DBT skills independently! The material is clear, easy to understand, and the practice exercises are super helpful. As a psychologist, I am looking forward to sharing this book with my patients to supplement the work we are doing in treatment and would highly recommend to any loved one who wanted to learn more about mindfulness or regulating intense emotions. I highly recommend!

My daughter’s therapist recommended this book and it may have saved my husband’s life. It is to be done with therapy, not in the place of therapy. But if you need impetus, to get that push to get you started, you can use it for that.

I was absolutely skeptical beginning this workbook as I have long struggled with mental health troubles. I am 30 years old and have been in therapy since age 11. This past year, along with starting EMDR therapy to address trauma, I began this workbook and for the first time in my life I am seeing lasting, consistent and noticeable changes in my behavior and thinking. The perfect example: I did not get paid for two pay periods in a row at a new job and instead of simmering quietly and then blowing up or walking out of my job or, just letting it slide and complain to my friends and family, I was able to address the issue promptly, effectively, communicate and feel my frustration and get the issue solved while recognizing I am doing my best as well as those who were in error. It was not easy but I did it. I’m sure this is not the only effective workbook for DBT but after years of struggling with communication, assertiveness, setting boundaries, depression and anxiety; doing this workbook while participating in EMDR sessions has absolutely changed my life. Thank you for helping me help myself!

This book is an awesome introduction to Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and contains so many wonderful insights. I so appreciate how the authors have taken these therapy concepts and made them accessible for the average reader and provided so many helpful exercises and prompts to apply the benefits of DBT in my day to day life. As someone who has experience with other forms of therapy (CBT, EMDR), I so enjoyed this self-guided introduction to DBT throughout the 12 weeks.

I love this workbook! I follow the author on Instagram and was excited for the book to come out. I like that it is broken up into the different “realms” of DBT. It has helpful exercises that are simple and effective. I used it as a refresher after I had finished a skills group and wanted to review skills but didn’t want to sign up for another group. I could work at my own pace and skip around to the skills I was interested in refreshing myself on. It’s a great workbook for anyone who wants to understand and better regulate their emotions–and I think everyone can benefit from that!

I cannot recommend this book highly enough!
